It seems that the Republican Party in Iowa is now run by the religious-political activist group the Christian Alliance. With a majority of the Iowa Republican central committee, they not only chose the Alliance's leader as the chairman of the state's delegates to the Republican National Convention, but they even prevented longtime Republican Senator Chuck Grassley from serving as a delegate. Grassley, who was supported by the Moral Majority in his first election to the U.S. Senate in 1980, has served as a prominent Republican in Congress for decades. Yet, that is apparently not enough. The Christian Alliance has decided that the former Moral Majority poster boy is not worthy enough to serve as a delegate to the convention. Wow!
By the way, Grassley spoke earlier this year at the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant and offered a great speech about our Christian responsibility to try and counter the tragic situation in many parts of the world where people are dying because they have no food. You can watch his speech here.

Senator Grassley, as did Rep. King and Rep. Latham, agreed to allow three rank and file Republicans to be delegates in their place.
ReplyDeleteThey will still be at the convention. They will have access on the floor to the delegates from Iowa and will be involved in every aspect of convention responsibilities, except to vote. The vote is already predetermined. The delegation will vote for John McCain and go along with what Sen. McCain wants for the party.
Thanks for the comment. It doesn't sound like they had a choice in the issue so saying they "agreed" to it seems like spin. I know it will not impact the convention vote. Maybe I am looking at this case wrong, but it still seems quite odd that someone of Grassley's stature was not chosen as a delegate.
