My latest column went out today in the BGCM E-Message. It is a defense of the Baptist World Alliance and its efforts to help Baptists in Cuba. The BGCM is a part of the BWA, which was falsely attacked recently by Pathway editor Don Hinkle. The title of the piece is “Hard to Fathom?”
In the same issue is another column by Rudy Pulido, a pastor and BGCM board member. Pulido, who has served in leadership roles for American United for Separation of Church and State, wrote his piece, “A Hinkle,” to critique a Hinkle column that inaccurately attacked AU.
After reading those two pieces, Hinkle’s new column today is quite humorous as he claims:

Yes, we are biased (biased toward Jesus), but that does not mean that what we publish is not true. The Pathway has never lied to its readers – and it never will as long as God says I am the editor.Hmmmm. To make matters worse, he goes on say that “the ultimate editor-in-chief” of the Pathway is “King Jesus!” Well, it seems that the work of proclaiming truth and setting the record straight is never complete.
So why exactly would you have to defend your support to defend the alliance reaching out to Cuban Christians?

But, are they any less Christian than an American?
Thanks for the comment. You raise an excellent question. The Cuban Christians are obviously no less Christian than American Christians because Christianity does not require any particular nationality.
ReplyDeleteI felt the need to defend the work in Cuba because there have been attacks. The real question of importance here is why would anyone attack such efforts?
The answer actually has virtually nothing to do with Cuba. Instead it is all about power. Southern Baptists has been defunding organizations that they cannot completely control. But they will demonize the organization first in an attempt to justify the withdrawal. The SBC did not have a good reason to leave the BWA so they had to grasp at straws like the Cuba charge.
The real issue was control. It is sad that this drive for power led them to slander their brothers and sisters in Christ and turn their backs on the Cuban Christians. As long as such inaccurate and harmful charges are made, I will respond.
