“God Problem”

Robert Parham has an insightful column at Ethics Daily today on religion and politics. It is entitled “Why Democrats Face a ‘God Problem;’ What They Must Do.” No matter what your political beliefs are, there are some good reminders in this piece about the importance of having a good message and the appropriate messengers.

Faith and politics should not be bed fellows. I am a Christian first and an American 2nd. My political views are somewhat based on the principles of Christ related to social responsibility, honesty, and justice.

However, I don't want public officials to use their position to push their spiritual views, even when I agree with them.

Today I see individuals running for office throwing around the name of God and faith. But I suspect that the motivation behind their speeches is to attract the votes of Christians of all colors.

I don't want a 'Christian' America that stomps all over free will. I want a free America that allows me to worship and talk about my faith openly.

    Good point.

    >Faith and politics should not be bed fellows.

But shouldn't people running for office be allowed to talk openly about their faith? They shouldn't stop being salt and light just because of their job, right?

    >However, I don't want public officials to use their position to push their spiritual views, even when I agree with them.

But if you believe that your view is the truth of reality, you don't want to promote a false worldview by your silence, do you? If you know the truth, can you comfortably sit back and watch people live for a lie?

Certainly not. Christianity is all about freedom. Salvation is a matter of the heart and folks can't be talked into faith or shouldn't be threatened into a religion as we see done in so many parts of the world.
