It is convention time. Over past week, Southern Baptists, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians have all been holding their national convention meetings. Each of the three now has a newly-elected leader.
While conventions are most important for those within the denomination, it is also important for all Christians to follow what happens at these meetings. It is a great way to learn more about our brothers and sisters in Christ so that we can in turn be able to better appreciate their work, as well as come together for dialogue and cooperation.
The Episcopalians made history by electing their first female presiding bishop. For more information about the meeting, check out the great commentary and useful links over at the Daily Episcopalian blog (formerly known as "The Blog of Daniel").
The Presbyterians also elected a female leader. Check out The Presbyterian Minister for good reports from the meeting.
Southern Baptists elected a surprise candidate who was the outsider not endorsed by those who have had a firm control over convention politics for the last two decades. For the best individual post on this meeting, check out Ben Cole's wrap-up.
Hopefully these meetings will result in each of the denominations doing more of God's work. And hopefully each will be able to better explain who they are and what they are about.
After being elected as the new President of the SBC, Frank Page explained, "I believe in the word of God. I'm just not mad about it. ... For too long Baptists have been known for what we're against. It's time to tell people what we're for."
Hopefully that will happen, because that is great advice for all of us as we try to tell the world who we are about what we are about.
