Mine Disaster Judgments

Two "ministers" have made hateful statements concerning the West Virginia mining disaster a couple weeks ago. If these two men do not repent they should be shunned and completely ignored from this point forward by all Christians.

Reverend Rob Schenck, founder and leader of the National Clergy Council, argued that God would "rebuke" America because it only turns to God in times of disaster:

"We often turn to God only when we feel like nothing else can be done. ... And, in the Bible, God rebuked nations who only turned to Him in their most extreme moments of need. ... That has been our tradition in the United States. Whenever we find ourselves in a situation where we get to the end of our own resources, we turn to God."

Apparently Schenck claims to know the spiritual condition of the people in the mining community. Other accounts suggest that many of the people were very faithful Christians. Maybe he should worry more about God rebuking those who kick people while they are down.

What should really embarrass Schenck and all of those who support him is that the other person to make hateful comments about this tragedy is none other than hate preacher Fred Phelps. His "church" has announced that they will picket the memorial service for the miners this Sunday. They declared:

"Thank God for His outpoured wrath and for 12 dead miners. ... God hates the Sago Miners and is tormenting them in Hell."

I hope that all Christians in the area will show up to show their love and support for the families in this time of grief and to reassure them that God loves them. While this garbage is to be expected from Phelps, Schenck should be ashamed that the only guy outdoing him is Phelps. Schenck always refers to himself as a "Missionary to Capital Hill." If he is the missionary, then no wonder there is so much scandal and godless activity going on there!
