Nabil Shaath, a senior Palestinian official, told the BBC that in June 2003 he overheard President George W. Bush tell Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, “God would tell me, ‘George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan’, and I did, and then God would tell me, ‘George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq’, and I did.”
While the White House quickly denied the statement, it has received a lot of coverage because it seems like something Bush would actually say (remember the really poor choice to use the word “crusade” after 9/11, and his frequent comments about his personal faith). We may never really know whether Bush made such a comment, but many people (if not most) believe it. That unfortunately makes Christians seem like religiously-driven warmongers.
