True Blue (in the Face)

According to Family Research Council Action (the political action committee of the James Dobson-founded Family Research Council), Republican Representative Joe Walsh is a family man. He was named a "True Blue" pro-family member of Congress for his "unwavering support of the family." As the president of both the Family Research Council and the Family Research Council Action, Tony Perkins, explained:
We thank Cong. Walsh who has voted consistently to defend faith, family and freedom. ... Cong. Walsh and other 'True Blue Members' have voted to repeal Obamacare, de-fund Planned Parenthood, end government funding for abortion within the health care law, uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, and continue support for school choice. I applaud their commitment to uphold the institutions of marriage and family.
That all sounds nice except for Perkins left out one little fact--Walsh's ex-wife has accused him of owing more than $100,000 in late child support payments. It seems hard to believe that a Christian group would just ignore such an issue as they put together their list of "pro-family" congresspeople. Shouldn't personal actions mean as much as public claims? Surely the Dobson-founded group can find more worthy politicians to praise. And surely they could create a more holistic way of measuring this--something that would not just look at votes but also consider the way one talks about the issue and the way one lives. To look merely at votes--which is the simple standard many advocacy organizations use--can create a misleading picture and can create embarrassing moments like the recognition of Walsh.

  1. In the last Dobson-hosted show I listened to (several years ago) he interviewed Tom "The Hammer" DeLay and his wife. This was shortly after DeLay resigned and the Jack Abramoff and another ethics investigation was still ongoing. Dobson mentioned none of this and simply praised and thanked him for being an upstanding man of God who adhered to Christian principles and did the same things Perkins praised Walsh for. Dobson made it sound like he'd been smeared by the Left simply because he was pro-life.

That's the reason why it was the last one I ever listened to.
