Twitter Communion?

A Methodist minister who was planning an online Twitter communion service was urged by Methodist leaders to cancel the event because they wanted time to "reflect and pray deeply in order to discern what developments are appropriate." The minister in question noted:

The issue boils down to two questions: Is remote communion a valid com munion? Is the Christian community on the internet a valid, gathered Christian community? If the answer to both these questions is 'Yes', then a communion service performed by such a community of believers must be valid and may be performed.

Although it is good for church leaders to utilize new technology, it is also important for such technologies to be carefully and critically considered. Shane Hipps warns of these types of issues very well in his book Flickering Pixels. The focus of the book is to consider the theological implication of the communication concept "the medium is the message."
