Yesterday, I participated in Bread for the World's annual lobby day in D.C. We were working to make permanent the current levels of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). These programs, which have enjoyed bipartisan support, are critical in helping lift millions of Americans above the poverty line (you can learn more about these tax credits for the working poor here). President Ronald Reagan once called the EITC "the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress." However, action must be taken in this year's budget to maintain the current levels that will otherwise expire. It was a fun day talking with congresspersons and their staffers, and meeting some of the more than 250 people who came from across the nation to participate in the lobby day.
