One of my favorite late night comedy segments is Jay Leno's "Headlines." Earlier this month, there was a newspaper error that could clearly make his show. The student newspaper at Brigham Young University accidentally referred to Mormon church leaders as "apostates" instead of "apostles." Oops! As a result, they recalled the issue and reprinted it. They also offered an apology. Just another reminder about how spell checker is only helpful if you are close enough to the word you want. As Mark Twain once wrote, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter--tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning."
Good one, Brian. I had seen the news about that earlier but had forgotten about it. I really like the quote by Mark Twain as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I had been meaning to write about it for a couple of weeks.
