The Columbia Journalism Review has an interesting piece about the changing meaning of the word "noisome." The piece uses the King James Version of the Bible to demonstrate that the word used to mean something like "deadly" instead of something like "unpleasant." As a result, the piece argues that the word is "losing some punch from its Biblical meaning." Although the piece does not consider the implications for the Bible, this is one reason why new translations of the Bible are needed. Even when dealing with the same language, a new translation might be needed to keep up with the changes occurring within that language. The English language is changing and we need our Scriptures to communicate clearly to people today.
