The American Dialect Society has named its annual word of the year, which recognizes the main word/phrase that was coined or suddenly used much more during the past year. They named "bailout" as the 2008 word of the year. Other top words included "lipstick," "change," "shovel-ready," and "game-changer." They also have words they recognize in other categories. I have written columns reflecting on a couple of the past word of the year choices: Truthiness and What have we "Plutoed"?
