Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal visited Iowa recently and many people are already speculating on the 2012 Republican primary (even though Barack Obama is still nearly two months away from even becoming president). An article about the visits includes a very good comment from Huckabee about what is needed in the pro-life movement. He argued:
Even the pro-life issue is not just an anti-abortion issue. That's only a small piece of the issue of life. It's also 8-year-old children, elderly people and the whole spectrum of how we treat other people. ... We're going to have to start being inclusive of issues such as poverty, disease and the environment."Amen! It is good to see someone pushing a larger view of what it means to be pro-life. The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin called this approach promoting a "seamless garment of life."
Here's an amen to you and Mr. Huckabee from Texas.
ReplyDeleteBrian,
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but to minimize abortion would be to create a great facade of pro-life-ness. If one doesn't work hard to ensure life can come to birth, pushing other politically correct facets--particularly the environment--is a pro-life farce.
Thanks for the comments!
ReplyDeleteCD: How are you "Agreed, but..."? Do you agree or not? You clearly do not agree with Huckabee or understand his point. Surely you do not think he does not care about preventing abortion! He was not saying that other issues trump but that one must focus on ALL of them to be truly pro-life. So are you going to remain partially pro-life and only focus on abortion or are you willing to try the seamless garment?
