Americans United has an good piece entitled "Cross Purposes." It decries a judge's ruling declaring a cross to be a secular symbol of patriotism. Although many Christians are excited that the ruling means the controversial cross memorial at Mt. Soledad in San Diego can stay for now, should we really be happy when the cross is stripped of its religious symbolism? I would rather have no cross memorial than a meaningless symbol. I dealt with a similar ruling in a column I wrote last year entitled "Getting Our Message Crossed." Let us spend less time fighting to post crosses on public land and more time helping people to understand the true message of the cross.
