A lawsuit was recently dismissed against Talisman Energy. It accused the company of being responsible for genocide. The company does business in Sudan, where genocide is occurring.
The judge, however, added that the decision “does not reflect a finding that the plaintiffs and their neighbours did not suffer great harms, or that the Republic of Sudan did not engage in gross violations of international law and the norms of civilized behaviour.”
This is an interesting tactic to take in an attempt to end the genocide in Sudan. If the corporate money flowing into the nation can be cut off through lawsuits, then maybe the killing and raping will end. Interestingly, the lawsuit was filed by the Presbyterian Church of Sudan.
If only their Christian brothers and sisters seemed to care as much about the genocide. After all, the Southern Baptist Convention owns millions of dollars of stock in Talisman and other companies doing business in Sudan. If we want to see an end to the genocide, then maybe Christians in America need to start caring more, working harder, and helping cut off the money flow that props up the Sudanese government.

It seems Bertrand Russell was right in saying, “I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its churches, has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.” I would say this is true for every religion. The only hope is in spirituality sans these institutions.
