Truthiness

Here is my latest column about some inaccurate "Christian" reporting: Truthiness. Here are a couple of highlights:

"Earlier this month the American Dialect Society (ADS) selected its 2005 Word of the Year: truthiness."

"Unless you watch The Colbert Report on Comedy Central you probably have not heard this word, since comedian Stephen Colbert made it up in a daily segment he calls 'The Word.' Truthiness is defined by the society as 'the quality of stating concepts or facts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true.' As Colbert explained, 'I don’t trust books. They’re all fact, no heart.' Basically, truthiness is wishful thinking and tall tales disguised as fact."

"A little fact-checking could have easily prevented this error. But with truthiness as one’s guide, who needs to check facts?"

"Honestly I do not understand why anyone would even read it anymore (except for comedic value). But as the popularity of tabloids prove, our society loves truthiness."

"Clarence Page wrote in his column about Frey’s book, 'Can’t handle the truth? Try truthiness. … The truth may make you free, but the truthiness will help you to feel better about yourself.' Christians, however, are supposed to be people of the Truth, not truthiness."
