Here is a good article over at Ethics Daily about the controversy surrounding blogger and IMB trustee Wade Burleson. It points out that Burleson's removal might make him the first trustee removed by any SBC board in 160 years for reasons other than non-attendance.
Even worse is that attempts in the late 1980s to remove a racist trustee failed. Curtis Caine, a trustee of the Christian Life Commission, said the following in 1988 at a CLC meeting:
"We have to be very careful that we do not get caught in the trap that is closing in around us about apartheid in South Africa, which doesn't exist any more and was beneficial when it did, because it meant separate development."
"We have to be very careful that we don't get caught up in the endorsement of—quote 'the reverend,' unquote—Martin Luther King."
The attempt to remove him at the 1989 SBC meeting was postponed for a year and then in 1990 the SBC Executive Committee dismissed the issue since Cain's four-year term had expired. However, he was then reelected to another term.
The racist was not kicked off but was reelected, but a man who has said nothing wrong might be kicked off because he dared to report to the people—his bosses—what was going on. How messed up is that?!
