While just a passing note in the article, this line jumped out at me:
"China has responded to Rome's overtures by saying the Vatican must not interfere in China's internal affairs and that the Holy See must sever ties with archrival Taiwan -- a condition that church officials already have suggested they would meet."
What?! The Vatican has suggested it would turn its back on Taiwan's Catholics! How ironic that in order to grant freedom and more connection to Catholics in China that the Vatican would cut off those in Taiwan. When Jesus talked about going after the lost sheep He did not mean that the "shepherd" should give one of the others to the wolf to eat!
