Unfortunately, Scarborough is not the only one who has made claims about God's judgment on a particular region through a Hurricane or Tsunami.
Back in 1998 Pat Robertson warned Orlando, Florida about impending doom because of its consideration of flying flags in support of Gay Pride Month. New York Daily News He said:
"You're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you. ... A condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs. It'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor."
Following the devastating Tsunami in Southeast Asia last December, Henry Blackaby suggested that it was God's punishment on the region. Baptist Press
The Baptist Press reported: "Henry Blackaby, speaking at a Kentucky pastors' conference here in mid-January, said he didn't fully appreciate the significance of the widespread destruction until he saw a map published by the Voice of the Martyrs depicting the most intense regions of Christian martyrdom worldwide. Blackaby said he noticed that the tsunami hit many of those same regions. He told a workshop audience that most Christians don't realize that 400,000 to 450,000 believers are killed annually for their faith, and that many regions of persecution shown the map 'match to the T' the tsunami's swath of destruction."
Blackaby also said:
"[But] if you read the Old Testament, especially, God is very concerned how the nations treat His covenant people. ...The nations that persecuted, offended and killed His people, God came down and destroyed them. And He's the same God today. He's just as concerned about His people."
"One imam said it's God's judgment on [them] because [they} let the infidel tourists come to [their] countries. ...So all kinds of religious leaders are feeling they have to give an answer."
Blackaby then went on to suggest that 9/11 also was part of God's judgement:
"Many of the pastors never connected 9-11 with God's warning to people in America - that He's beginning to remove the hedge of protection from America because of the sin of God's people. ...But God's people never make the connection with their sin."
Joining Scarborough in linking Katrina to God's judgment is the website of Fred Phelps, the anti-homosexual preacher. He declares "Thank God for Katrina." Phelps He also writes:
"New Orleans, symbol of America, seen for what it is: a putrid, toxic, stinking cesspool of fag fecal matter." "It is NOT a sin to rejoice when God executes His wrath and vengeance upon American."
How sad! These "preachers" have drifted far from the teachings of Jesus. What has happened to American Christianity? When did we become focused on condemning others and kicking them when they are down? It is time to put such harmful rhetoric aside and focus simply on sharing the love of Jesus!
